Bulging Disc

What is a bulging disc and how is it treated at Peak Performance?

The disc is the space between the vertebra.

What is a disc bulge? How do I know if I have a bulging disc? How is a disc bulge different from a herniated disc?
Imagine your spine as a stack of jelly-filled donuts. Each donut represents a vertebra, and the jelly inside is like the soft cushion called the disc. These discs act as shock absorbers, helping your spine move smoothly. A disc bulge happens when the jelly inside pushes out beyond its usual boundary but doesn’t break through the outer layer.
This bulging can press on nearby nerves, causing pain, numbness, or weakness. It’s not the same as a herniated disc, where the jelly actually leaks out. Think of a bulge as a balloon that’s been squeezed but hasn’t popped yet.

What are the symptoms of a bulging disc?
Knowing the signs of a disc bulge helps you act quickly and avoid worsening the problem. Symptoms can vary depending on where the bulge occurs in your spine.
1. Lower back bulge: You might feel sharp or dull pain in your lower back, sometimes radiating down your legs (sciatica). Tingling or numbness in your feet or toes can also happen.
2. Neck bulge: Pain or stiffness in your neck, headaches, or numbness in your arms and hands are common.
3. General symptoms: Muscle weakness, difficulty moving, or a burning sensation along a nerve path.

How does Peak Performance treat a bulging disc?
In addition to rest, lifestyle changes, and pain management, Peak Performance focuses on tailored care that supports your recovery and enhances your physical performance. Shockwave therapy and dry needling can stimulate healing and reduce pain, as well as specific physical therapy exercises.
